Twin Elections 2020: Political Parties Clarify Their Stance

Days after the deadline for the submission of candidatures for the February 9, 2020 twin legislative and municipal elections, some political parties have explained their political decisions.

Two candidates who ran for the 2018 Presidential elections coming third and fourth respectively, Cabral Libii and Osih Joshua granted separate press conferences in Yaounde on Thursday, November 28, 2019.

SDF Press Conference

Osih Joshua, SDF Member of Parliament and First Vice National Chairman of the lead opposition party in the country told media men and women at the party’s headquarters that the decision of the SDF to run for the twin elections is proof of the party’s political responsibility to strive for a return to normalcy in the North West and South West regions.

He said the SDF is in the process of pushing government in one way or the other to realize the urgency for peace to return to the English speaking regions.

The first Vice National Chairman of the SDF said the party has proposed a number of solutions for peace, including the special status for both regions and the organisation of local elections to the President of the Republic who was elected by Cameroonians, to take the final decision to ensure that peace returns in the two regions.

Joshua Osih dismissed all contrary opinions stating that the SDF is working for a return to peace in the English speaking regions by participating in the electoral process.

The SDF inspires hope for better days in the lives of the populations of the two English speaking regions, he insisted.

CPNR Press conference

The Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation requested that the elections organising body, ELECAM extend the deadline for the submission of candidates by 15 additional days.

According to the President of the party, Cabril Libii, the extra days will be necessary for the party to complete the essential candidature files and deposit complete dossiers for the twin elections.

He pointed out that the supplementary days are necessary to catch up which challenges faced by members of the party in the constitution of investiture files.

Cabral Libii pointed out difficulties including the “refusal by some municipal and administrative authorities to sign candidature documents, like birth certificates, caution fees, and certificate of residence amongst others”.

Despite the challenges reported in some municipalities, the party is running in about 40 constituencies for the legislative and 36 councils with 1300 municipal counselors in the race in the municipal elections.

The President of the Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation told the press that they may consider withdrawing from the election on the eve, if measures are not taken to allow their candidates deposit their files for the electoral race.

To him the measure will make the electoral race more equitable with all parties having equal opportunities in the democratic process.
