#237vote: Highstakes prior election of Yaounde, Douala city Mayors
On Tuesday, March 3, 2020, the city Mayors of the political capital, Yaounde and the Economic capital, Douala will be elected into office.
The pioneers will be choosen amongst the municipal councillors of the region who were elected on February 9, 2020 in each of the regions.
The elective position of city mayor introduced by the General Code of Decentralisation and Local Authorities. It replaces the Government Delegate who was generally appointed by the President of the Republic.
The outgoing Gilbert Tsimi Evouna and Fritz Ntone Ntone
Bulldozer Government Delegates, Gilbert Tsimi Evouna has transformed Yaounde into a beautiful city with several relaxation sites amongst others while Fritz Ntone Ntone has brought sanity to Douala.
The elections will mark the end of the functions of Government Delegate as the City Mayor will have to take over.
Prior to the elections, the two government delegates have presided over their last meeting with their close collaborators this Monday, March 2, 2020 in Yaounde and Douala.
However at each of the City Councils, it’s business as usual.
Challenges awaiting the City Mayors
Yaounde is very strategic because it is the seat of government institutions, the capital of the country, headquarters of several international bodies and residence of diplomats accredited to Cameroon.
So too is Douala which is a business hub having one of the busiest seaports in the Central African sub region. It the the most populous city in the country.
Douala and Yaounde are the richest and the most populated cities in the country and consequent the prestige of their Mayors.
The two government delegates who have managed the cities for over a decade each have succeeded to build a personality for themselves over time.
Profile of outgoing Government Delegates
Gilbert Tsimi Evouna, born on November 20, 1954 is a native of Oyom-Abang in the Centre region. The Urban Planer is a retired civil servant who served at the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing. He later became deputy Government Delegates to the Yaounde City Council from 1987 to 2005 when he was promoted to Government Delegate by presidential decree.
Dr Fritz Ntone Ntone is a medical practitioner since 1982 when he left medicine school. He had been Director of the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala before his appointment as Government Delegate to the Douala City Council on September 30, 2006.
