COVID-19: Hashtag to Denounce Suspected Cases goes Viral

A new hashtag, #BalanceTonMbenguiste has gone into viral use by Cameroonians especially those of the French expression.

Literally translated to English, the hashtag says, “Denounce Your Bushfaller”, Bushfaller meaning someone who just returned from overseas.

Origin Of Hashtag

It all started after Public Health Minister, Dr. Manaouda Malachie signed communiqués, requesting passengers who returned to Cameroon on particular flights to come for COVID-19 screening.

Minister Manaouda’s daily insistence on the screening led to the creation of the hashtag, #BalanceTonMbenguiste as a call to get all those who recently entered Cameroon to get screened for COVID-19.

It is also used by many to warn those hiding people who have refused to be screened to denounce them or face health risks.

#BalanceTonMbenguiste was first used on Twitter on 25th January 2019, in a post not related to COVID-19.

It was used in relation to COVID-19 for the first time on Twitter on March 29, 2020, at 9:59am.

On Facebook, #BalanceTonMbenguiste was first used on March 29, 2020 at 2:03pm.
