Ecotourism: Cameroon to Venture in Ornithology

Cameroon will soon be a tourist destination for the ornithology sector of ecotourism. This is thanks to a planned expedition to be carried out in the forests of the country between February and March 2021.

Noam Shany, an Expert in International Commercial Strategy and his partners visited Cameroon to brief the Minister of Tourism and his partners on Cameroon’s potential in that sector.

During a press briefing on September 24, 2020, Noam who is versed with the tourism sector explained to pressmen that Africa and Cameroon in particular has many birds which could never be found anywhere else in the world. This makes it a fertile ground for Ornitology, the study of birds.

He noted that eventhough the continent is well known for the existence of apes, birds are another treasure of the African forests.

The ecotourist went on to site birds like the Mount Kupe Bushshrike could be found just in Cameroon and Nigeria.

Ornithology Ecotourism, a Generator of Wealth

Noam Shany explains that if Cameroon gets involved in ornithology ecotourism, the country will reap huge benefits.

“One ecotourist equals seven jobs created,” he insists.

He further adds that once tourists start coming, the local people will begin thinking of providing lodging facilities and the construction of roads will follow, amongst other things.

Inolvement of Local People

Noam Shany sates that the local people of the ornithogical site will be fully involved in the exploitation of their site.

He insists that they will not be sidelined as is the fear of many.

To buttress this idea, he discussed with officials in the Ministry of Tourism to ensure that they are in charge of the bird watchers doing the study on each site so that the inhabitants remain in charge of their area.

It is worthy to note that this strategy about to be carried out in Cameroon was used in Angola (in 2018), Peru Taiwan and Australia, amongst many other areas with vast forests.
