Kumba Massacre: Women’s Empowerment Ministry Denounces Macabre Act

Government Ministers, Members of the Civil Society and women across Yaounde have joined their voices to denounce the massacre of school children in Kumba, South West Region of Cameroon.

The people made their stance clear during a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Women Empowerment and the Family (MINPROFF).

On the occasion, the Minister called for an end to the killings, saying that it all began with men and now women and innocent children are the main target.

She recounted the story of 16th June 1976 when 12-year-old Hector Peterson was killed on his school campus during the Soweto massacre in South Africa.

His death led to the declaration of that day as the Day of the African Child.

“This time around”, she cried, “It is not one child killed, not two or three but seven!”

Prof Marie Therese Abena Ondoa extended her condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the quick recovery of those in the hospital.

She also called for a show of solidarity towards those in Kumba and children who may have witnessed the killings or seen images on social media.

During the ceremony those present prayed to GOD to please bring an end to the crisis in the South West and North West Regions of Cameroon.

Songs were also sung in memory of the children who died and to encourage Cameroonians to stay strong in the face of this sad event.
