Lebialem : 21 Hostages Rescued In Two Operations

The Rapid Intervention Battalion has rescued 11 people taken hostage by separatist fighters in the South West Region.

On Friday October 16, 2020 the hostages comprised of elderly people and a Catholic Priest were freed by defence forces.

The group is the second set of people held hostage by the armed separatist group in Lebialem Division of the South West Region that have been liberated within a week.

The military operation that led to their release came days after 10 hostages held by armed separatists were freed on Tuesday October 13, 2020 in Besali in Wabane Subdivision of Lebialem Division.

The latest group of victims were held in a separatist hideout run by Agbor Oscar Nkeng, an armed separatist leader.

The leader was targeted by the military during the previous operation of October 13 in Besali; an operation the led to the fall of another armed separatist leader, Ayeke and the destruction of his camp.

His comrade, Agbor Oscar escape though it is believed that he might have been injured.

The Commander of the 6th Section of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) Unit in Kumba, Lieutenant Colonel Maidoango Desiré transported the body of Ayeke and the military hardware recovered in his camp by military helicopter from Besali to Kumba.

Context Of The Operations

The military has launched operations to dislodge armed separatist camps in Lebialem Division in the South West region.

The military operations are in line with efforts to free the population from armed separatists groups that kidnap, torture, rape, kill and terrorise civilians in the North West and South West regions.
