The Competition For Electoral College Votes

According to American electoral law, each candidate has to win a certain number of Electoral College votes to be elected President of the United States.

There are a total of 538 colleges partly based on its population and the winner has to obtain absolute majority of 270 or more.

Consequently, a candidate can have greater number of votes at the national level without winning the Electoral College as was the case with Hilary Clinton in 2016.
