TotalCHAN2020: Cameroon Bows Out as 4th Placed Team

The intermediate Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have ended their journey at the African Nations Championship failing to grab a third place medal.

The game was full of spectacle and quality football but short of goals that spectators wanted from the lions.

The players who are generally pulled from the local league made several attempts at goal but the determined Guinean defence never gave them an opening.

As the lions all went upfront in search for goals, they left their back yard vulnerable and Syli Nationale took advantage of the weakness scoring two goals in the first half.

Game number 31 since the start of the African Nations Championship between Host, Cameroon against Guinea competing for the 3rd place is the last but one of the competition and last in Bepanda, Douala.

As the match was played, the Coach of Cameroon’s team, Ndtoungou Mpile Martin made changes reinforcing the offensiveness of the game but the strategy of the Guinean coach, Mohamed Kanfory Bangoura, was efficient in blocking the lions.

Goals Scored

Guinea scored two goals with the first half and consolidated their victory by defending during the second half.

At the 9th minute the first goal scored by Morlaye Sylla, Jersey No 10 for
Guinea destabilized the lions as fans called for an equalizer.

Pressure mounted by the lions didn’t playoff but created a 45th minute opportunity for Guinea to score again through Jersey number 9, Mamadouba Bangoura.

The score line situation remained at Guinea 2-0 Cameroon till the end of the encounter.

At the end of the Third place match, Jersey No 10 for Guinea Morlaye Sylla was declared Man of the Match; a trophy he was winning for the fourth time in the championship.

After the match, the ceremony for the award of medals to Third place winner of CHAN 2020 began.

Cameroon’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi and Fecafoot interim President, Mbombo Njoya and CAF 3rd vice President and President of South Africa Football Association, guests of honour handed over medals to winners of 3rd place, Guinea.

Cameroon’s journey ended at the African Nations Championship as the fourth with 4 goals scored, 2 victories, two draw games and two defeats.

Coaches of Cameroon and Guinea explained their experience and feelings to reporters after the encounter.

Cameroon’s coach described the performance of his team as satisfactory blaming the absence of local championship for their dismal performance

Guinea’s Coach said he is proud of the performance of his team that has grabbed the bronze medal from Cameroon after winning the third place match

The Man of the Match for the fourth time celebrates their bronze medal and his trophy as merited for the Syli Nationale of Guinea.

Spectators took souvenir pictures with Tara the Mascot of CHAN Cameroon 2020 at the end of the last game played at the Reunification Stadium in Douala.

The referees of the encounter included, Central Referee: Lahlou Benbraham (Algerian)

1st assistant: Mohammed Ibrahim (Sudanese)

2nd Assistant: Attia M. Essay Amsaad (Libyan)

4th official: Beida Dahane (Mauritanian)

They also received medals at the end of the match.

Cameroonian and foreign fans have appreciated the quality of infrastructure and organization of the CHAN Cameroon 2020 and look forward to the African Cup of Nations next year.
