Cameroon’s Pioneer First Lady, Germaine Habiba Ahidjo laid to rest

The late Germaine Habiba Ahidjo, wife the former President of the Republic of Cameroon has been laid to rest next to her husband for eternity.

She was buried in strict privacy in line with Islamic law on April 21, 2021 in Dakar, Senegal. She was buried in the Muslim cemetery of Yoff next to her husband, Ahmadou Ahidjo who died on November 30, 1989.

Germaine Habiba Ahidjo died in hospital in the Senegalese capital, Dakar in the night of Monday April 19, 2021 at the age of 89 from an illness.

Born in 1932 in Mayo-Tsanaga Division of the Far North region of Cameroon, Germaine Habiba Ahidjo got married to Ahmadou Ahidjo in 1957. She was a nurse by training.

Before has passing aay, she had spent over 30 years in West Africa.

During the 22 years spent as first lady, Cameroonians keep the image of her as a reserved, intelligent, and simple woman who was open to exchanges.

She left the world without seeing her dream of having her husband’s remains repatriated and given honours due to his status as former Head of State. Authorities in Yaoundé rather perceive the repatriation as a family decision.

Following her demise, President Paul Biya sent a condolence message to the family.
