COVID-19: Four vaccines on Cameroon’s immunization plan

Sinopharm, AstraZeneCa, Johnson and Johnson, and Sputnik V are four vaccines approved by Cameroon’s National Scientific Council and National Immunization Technical Board to roll back the pandemic in the country .

Cameroon launched the first phase of the vaccination against #COVID19 on April 13, few hours after the arrival of 200,000 doses of the Chinese donated vaccine, Sinophram.

The vaccines were quickly dispatched to 243 vaccination centers across the country’s 10 regions. Health personnel, persons above 50 and those suffering from pre-existing health conditions, teachers, bike riders and taxi drivers are currently taking the first dose of the vaccine.

Sinopharm, China’s Gift

Sinopharm is the vaccine created by the China National Pharmaceutical Group
Pharmaceutical industry company to fight the pandemic that started in the country, before spreading to other countries.

The vaccine has not been widely used in the country because of low prevalence, but it has been approved for emergency use in many countries outside China. According to clinical trials, Sinopharm is 86% efficient.

AstraZeneCa , the British vaccine

One of the most dispute COVID19 vaccines, AstraZeneCa is also in Cameroon’s list of approved vaccines. In recent weeks, many countries discontinued use of the vaccine because of lack of data on its effectiveness in older people.

South Africa and a host of European countries including , France, Germany, Denmark and South Africa stopped use of the vaccine. But WHO, European Medicines Agency (EMA), and the African Union (AU) later said AstraZeneCa was 70% effective and the benefits of the vaccine outweigh possible risks.

Nonetheless, Cameroon still suspended plans to acquire the vaccine. Public health authorities said the vaccine could not be used if doubts in its side effects persisted. After observing for sometime, the country is making a u-turn.

A total of 391,200 AstraZeneCa vaccines are expected in Cameroon on April 17. By the end of May 2021, Cameroon will receive 1,752, 000 vaccines of AstraZeneCa.

America’s Johnson and Johnson

4,000,000 doses Johnson and Johnson, the vaccine produced by the American multinational corporation are expected in Cameroon anytime soon.

As of April 12, over 6.8 million doses of the vaccine have been administered to persons in the USA. Johnson and Johnson is administered in just a single shot to persons aged 18 and above . It is 66% effective, lower than other vaccines with 95% efficacy. But, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Food and Drug Administration have called the use of the vaccine be halted following reports of blood clots, similar to those reported by several European countries after use of AstraZeneca.

Russia’s Spoutnik V

The National Order of Doctors in Cameroon received 1200 doses of Spoutnik V.

It was created by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Despite having 91% effectiveness, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently reviewing the vaccine following the death of 4 people in Russia, shortly after taking the vaccine.
