Parliament: The Senate Pays Hommage to Senator Nfor Emeritus Victor Mukete

Cameroon’s Senate pays tribute to the late Nfon Victor Eseminsong Mukete this Thursday May 27, 2021. He was the eldest member of the Senate from when he was elected till his demise at the age of 103.


He was born on November 15, 1918 in Kumba South West Region of Cameroon to Chief Abel Mukete of Kumba and Maria Dibo Mukete nee Ebakodibo.

Educational Background

He attended Primary School at the Kumba Government School before proceeding to Nigeria to attend secondary school at the Government College Umuahia.

He continued his studies at Higher College of Yaba in Lagos, Nigeria. He obtained a Diploma in Agriculture from the School of Agriculture in Ibadan.

His professional career began in 1944 when he served as an Assistant Agricultural Officer till 1948.

He later moved to the Manchester University in England on the Colonial Development and Welfare Scholarship in 1948 and obtained a B.Sc. Hons in Botany.

The same year, he went to Christ’s College, Cambridge University England on scholarship for the Devonshire Course in Agriculture from 1951 – 52.

Positions Held

Nfon Emeritus Victor Mukete was the Nfon of Kumba, first Class Chief and Paramount Ruler of the Bafaws since 1968.

He was member of the Central Committee of the CPDM, Honorary President, Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Craft; Chairman of the board of Cameroon Telecommunications, (CAMTEL), Senator and Chairman of the Mukete Estates Limited as well as the Mukete Plantations Limited.

Appointments

Nfon Emeritus Victor Mukete assumed management of the Family Agro industrial Enterprise in 1953.

He was elected Member of the Nigerian House of Representatives in 1955.

He was appointed Federal Minister without Portfolio and Later Federal Minister of Research and Information until the dissolution of and withdrawal of the Southern Cameroon’s from the Nigerian House of Representatives in December 1959.

He was appointed Chairman of the Cameroon Development Corporation from 1960 to 1982.

Other Positions and Appointments

Nfon Emeritus Victor Mukete was General Secretary of the Kamerun United National Congress (KUNC) and General Secretary of the Kamerun National Congress (KNC) from 1953 to 1955.

He was member of the Nigeria Cocoa Marketing Advisory Committee, Member of the Southern Cameroon’s Marketing Board from 1954 to 1955.

He was also member of the West Cameroon Police Service Commission from 1964 to 1966.

Nfon Emeritus Victor Mukete was chairman of the Greater Kumba planning Authority; member of the National Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Mines; Member of the Economic and Social Council. He was also Chairman of the Cameroon Development Corporation from 1960 -1982.

He was a Judge of the court of Impeachment and Chairman of Intelcam
