Ramadan/Ascension : Government prescribes strict respect of preventive measures

Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has said Muslim faithfuls and Christians should strictly uphold COVID-19 preventive measures during the feasts of Ramadan and Ascension.

The two religious feasts will coincidentally be celebrated on Thursday May 13, 2021 in Cameroon and other parts of the world.

During a meeting to hand over masks offered by Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, the Territorial Administration Minister said the Ramadan and Ascension feasts should should be low-keyed, and faithfuls should have more time for meditation.

In addition to these instructions, each religious community received 10,000 masks.

On Wednesday May 11, the National Moon Crescent Commission, (NMCC) announced that the moon which marks the end of the month-long fast had not been sighted. Accordingly, the feast of Ramadan will take place on May 13. But, the date for the Ascension was already known.

Cognizant that both religious feasts will take place amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the religious leaders said they will ensure preventive measures are upheld to the letter.

COVID-19 figures

According to recent figures from the country’s Public Health Ministry, 74, 946 confirmed cases, 70, 497 recoveries and 1,152 deaths are on record. Among the confirmed cases are 3 297 active cases. The recovery rate is 94%, case fatality rate is 1,5% and 1,9 % severity rate.

As infections continue to surge, the Public Health Minister, Dr. Manaouda Malachie calls on Cameroonians to get vaccinated. China’s Sinopharm vaccine and UK’s AstraZeneCa vaccine are currently being rolled out.

As of May 4, Cameroon has administered 22 669 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, and
14 464 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
