#2021Exams : GCE exams begin nationwide hitch-free

The General Certificate of Education (GCE) exams have begun in examination centres across the country this June 29, 2021.

On the first day of the exams, GCE candidates wrote Economics paper 1 and 2 for both the Ordinary and Advanced Levels. Geology paper 1 and 2 was written by only  Advanced Level candidates. Click here for GCE 2021 Timetable

As early as 6 am, students headed for exam centres where exams where scheduled to begin at 8am. The morning session ended at 1pm, and the afternoon session from 1-5Pm.

At the Government Bilingual High School Nkoleton, 600 candidates sat both the Ordinary and Advanced Level. A total of
489 were Ordinary Level candidates and 111 candidates are sat the Advanced Level.

The GCE 2021 is taking place amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that has lingered on for two years now. To keep the virus at bay, the school administrators have installed hand washing stations on campus to ensure that candidates regularly was their hands. All candidates were also required to wear their masks before accessing the exam centre.

As the exams began, the Minister of Secondary Education, Dr. Pauline Nalova Lyonga visited some exam centres to assess the conduct of the exams . After her visit, she said the English speaking people have respected tradition, describing the exam as “tradition reassured”.

“They all started at the same time and will finish at the same time. You could see that before we came, they were all settled in their classrooms, all ready to begin. They all had water to wash their hands and masks “. The Minister said

From 14,000 to over 20,000 candidates in North West Region

Although the North West Region has been hard hit by the sociopolitical-political crisis, school authorities say the number of candidates who sat the Ordinary Level exam this year has moved from 14,000 to over 20,000 candidates in 50 examination centres. Over 6000 additional candidates sat this session of the exam compared to the 2020 GCE .

The GCE exam was written in all the seven Divisions of the region, amidst tight security.

37,287 Candidates sit exams in the South West Region

Meanwhile, thousands of GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level candidates sat the exam in the South West Region. Apart from a few absences and late comers, examiners say the candidates kept to the rules and regulations of the exam.

A total of 30,141 candidates are sitting the June session of the GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level in the South West Region. In addition to that number are  7146 candidates writing the Technical Vocational Education (TVE) Intermediate exams.

The exams are also reported to have taken place in other regions across the country without any major incidents.
