#AFCONHandball: Cameroon Vs Congo, Angola Vs Tunisia at the Semis
The host Cameroon had an easy ride over next door neighbours, the Falcon of Nigeria during their quarter final battle at the ongoing 24th edition of the Senior Women’s Handball AFCON at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex. Infact Cameroon stunned Nigeria 44-14 to grab the last semi final ticket.
The handball Lionesses of Serge Christian Guebogo joined Angola, Tunisia and Congo to make a list of four semifinalists, and four African representatives at the next World Women’s Handball Championship in Spain.
Cameroon separated with Nigeria at half time on an overwhelming score of 26-03, in favour of host, Cameroon.
The almost dysfunctional and uncoordinated Nigerian defense at the second half played to the advantage of Cameroon moving the scores this time to 44 while Nigeria managed 14 at full time.
Just to note that, the Nigerian team faced Cameroon without her star player Ovetuo Racheal Sharon who sustained an injury during the last group game against the Goodluck Girls of Kenya, winners of the President’s Coup against debutants,Madagascar.
The tall and tactful 14 shirted Cameroonian Yotchoum Jasmine was baptized Woman of the Match for her show of professionalism at the defence and the strike line.
Earlier at 12 noon, 13th time champions in the tournament, The Perles of Angola edged the DR Congo on a score of 29-20 to head to the semi-finals for the 15th time in the Championship.
Angola will challenged the North African Ladies of Tunisia during the first semifinal game to be played this Wednesday, June 16 at 4.pm local time.
Tunisia on her part had a difficult fight for her money before grabbing one of the highly solicited and prestigious tickets for the semis.
The Carthage ladies held hands with the Guinea and separated on a seven goal different at full time , that is 27-20.
Then came Senegal and Congo, the clash of the titans. Infact, the two teams parted ways at the last minute on a difference of one goal, a nightmare and a difficult pile for Senegalese players to swallow as many of them sadly laid on the floor at the sound of the last whistle
Before then, Senegal unfortunate played the first 14 minutes without a single goal while her opponent Congo was already at 5 handballs.
The third quarterfinal match, and one of the highly disputed between Congo and Senegal ended at 21-20 in favour of Congo, a great deal for semifinals and the qualification for the World Championship.
2021 World Women’s Handball Championship: Cameroon, Congo, Tunisia and Angola for Africa
The four semi-finalists at the African Handball Championship in Cameroon have directly reserved seats at the upcoming World Women’s Handball Championship in Spain to be organised from December 2 to 19, 2021.
Africa benefit four spaces after the 2018 Doha Congress by the International Handball Federation that increased the participation tally from 24 to 32 onwards.
Angola heads to the World Championship for the 16th time in history.
As as now, the Netherlands go to Spain as the defending champion, a title she won in December 2019 over Spain in Japan.
