Agriculture: Cameroon Poised to Boost Cocoa Production Capacity

Cameroon’s Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana has promised cocoa producers bigger quantities of better quality and remuneration.

He made the declaration in Kekem in the Upper Nkam Division, West region to cocoa stakeholders where he launched the 2021/2022 cocoa season.

It was reported that the 2020-2021 cocoa season saw 292,472 tons, 465kg of the crop traded at the domestic level.

This brings an increase of more than 35,000 tons compared to the previous season.

With 334.8 billion CFAF as claims of the sector’s contribution to the country’s economy in 2021, the stakes of the 2021-2022 cocoa season are numerous given the context.

Minister Mbarga confirmed that Cameroon’s cocoa market prize is among the best in the world.

He reiterated the importance of building a strong relationship between the producers and the government.

The importance of meeting local and international standards was also evoked amongst which is the building of more storage facilities and opening up production bases.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbaïrobe said government has stood as support to farmers by helping them improve on the quality of the cocoa they produce.

Actions will be focused on sustainability with the creation of more post harvest excellence centres and partnerships which will favour the marketing of bigger quantities of the Cameroonian cocoa brand at home and abroad.
