2020 Nobel Peace Prize: WFP Cameroon Staff Receive Symbolic Award

Staff of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Cameroon have been recognised for their contributions in bringing life and hope to the vulnerable across the country.

The staff were recognised with certificates and pins of recognition handed over by the WFP Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Chris Nikoi, as symbol of the Nobel Peace Prize award the WFP received in 2020.

About the Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to WFP

The Nobel Committee explains that the World Food Programme was given the award for, “its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

In this regard, the WFP is being celebrated and acknowledged as a voice reaching out to about 270 million people facing acute food insecurity in the world.

The WFP has been instrumental in providing food where the world’s poorest, most vulnerable people live in line with the belief that food can be a cornerstone for peace.

“When Governments are weak or corrupt, when people are at the mercy of armed groups, our presence provides hope and our food assistance is a lifeline for families caught up in conflict. Providing food at a community level also removes one of the major sources of friction among the hungry, building bridges and helping communities to build peace,” officials of WFP argue.

Even when conflicts end, the WFP stays to help people back onto their feet and help
communities build back stronger with resilience programmes.

The Nobel Prize also comes in to celebrate and acknowledge ths organisation’s partners who have beem supporting it towards achieving its goals.

What Next?

After expressing her joy with her organisation receiving the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, the Country Director of WFP Cameroon, Wanja Kaaria says there is still much work to be done.

She indicates that according to their analysis, Cameroon has about 2.6 million people facing food insecurity yet the WFP has been able to reach just about a million. So the organisation has to reach out to the rest.

Wanja Kaaria adds that Cameroon is a generous host to refugees from Nigeria and Central Africa and so she must be continuously supported to feed these people and those displaced within the country.
