Security measures that will be applied during the festive end of year period have been examined at the traditional end of year security evaluation meeting presided over by the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of defence.
This year edition was however unique as defence and security experts also outline strategies to be put in place during the Africa Cup of Nations that Cameroon will host as from January 2022.
According to Minister Joseph Beti Assomo, the meeting is timely to step up security for guests and delegations that will be visiting Cameroon for the continental football jamboree.
He said the “meeting taking place at an historic moment when the entire world will have their eyes on Cameroon which is already experiencing the frenzy of the Sports festival.” The security situation in the restive North West and South West regions also came under review during the security evaluation meeting attended by commanders of all the different joint military regions and other senior defence and security officials in the country.
The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence called on security services to be on high alert especially as terrorist acts have resurfaced recently in the two regions after a period of relative calm.
“The Number of improvised Explosive devises recorded over the past few weeks in the cities of Buea and Bamenda and the loss of human lives and properties recorded during some terrorist acts underline the need for utmost vigilance in the security coverage of the flagship sporting event in preparation”. Minister Joseph Beti Assomo said.
Defence and Security officials have been told to device strategies to ensure a peaceful celebration of end of year festivities in their respective areas of command.
