Fighting Gender-based Violence: Capacities of Refugee Leaders Reinforced

Some young refugee leaders under the banner of the “Girls Leadership” network are ready to serve as agents to denounce Gender-based Violence (GBV) and assist victims.

This is thanks to a workshop organised by Plan International Cameroon in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, this November 2, 2021.

During the session, the refugee leaders were brought back to the drawing board to define key concepts linked to GBV and enlightened on procedures to follow when dealing with the vice.

The Coordinator of the session, Patricia Kamga Wata of Plan Cameroon, explained ways of identifying and preventing Gender-based Violence.

She then led the young delegates to identify types of GBV. This was opportunity for many to share individual experiences on the subject.

It was then time to identify the “do’s” and “don’ts” when dealing with victims of GBV.

As rule of thumbs, Patricia Kamga Wata insisted, “When faced with violence, the first thing to do is to denounce it.” She explained that when a witness of GBV stays silent, the witness is doing more harm than good.

At the end of the session, the participants had a better understanding of how to handle Gender-based Violence in their communities.

One of them, Jeanette Habyarimana,
Rwandan Refugee affirms she is ready to practice the lessons in the  area where she resides.
