AFCON 2021: Unexpected Best Performances of the First Round

By beating Ghana and Tunisia, AFCON debutants, Comoros and Gambia have proven that they didn’t qualify for the 33rd edition by chance.

Comoros sailed through to the knock out stage at the detriment of the black stars.

The Gambia also held another giant to a 1-0 win in their third group game to the surprise of many.

Cameroonians have been in a joyful mode with team captain Vincent Aboubakar calling him pet names for his unexpected impressive performance. With five goals scored in 3 matches he is tipped to be the top scorer of the tournament.

Besides the lions that scored 7 of the 14 goals in group A, the two other representatives of the Central African Sub region, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea have all qualified for the knockout stage.

The Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea, that was absent in the two previous editions sealed their place after a hard fought 1-0 win against Sierra Leone in a Group E

History books are yet to finish writing the tales of the Silikans of Comoros are still in the competition while African football giants and favourites of their groups, Ghana and title holders Algeria are backing their backs to return home.

Debutants Gambia also made history by beating the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia to a 1-0 in a fascinating Group F game to qualify as second place team in the group.

Super Eagles of Nigeria have kept a clean sheet as the only team to collect 9 points in the group stage.

The performances at the group stage only indicates that the knockout stage will be full of fireworks.
