UNSAC at 30: Celebrating Strengthened Relations in Central Africa

The United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa, UNSAC is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with a bag loaded of achievements.

These achievements are being discussed alongside charting the way forward at a two-day colloquium at the International Relations Institute of Cameroon, IRIC in Yaounde.

Opening the session this May 23, 2022, Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations Mbella Mbella indicated that Cameroon hosting the UNSAC anniversary is proof that the country is known as one that supports peace, security and stability.

He also announced the holding of the 53rd UNSAC Ministerial Meeting on June 3, 2022 on the sidelines of the anniversary  celebration.

In addition to these, Minister Mbella Mbella said that the choice of venue for the colloquium is proof of the place IRIC occupies in the Central African Subregion and beyond.

UNSAC, 30 Years of Preventive Diplomacy

Since its creation in 1992, UNSAC has contributed in preventing conflicts by providing solutions to peace and security issues in Central Africa.

UNSAC has encouraged dialogue and mutual understanding between states of the sub region. This has helped member states better understand the political and social realities of each other, while creating personal links.

UNSAC has also made the UN as a whole to better understand the peace and security challenges in Central Africa.

Some Major Achievements

– Adoption of a Non-Aggression Pact on July 8, 1996 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

– Establishment of the Early Warning Mechanism of Central African Countries (MARAC) adopted in 2007.

– Establishment of the Sub-Regional Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa.

– Adoption of the Kinshasa Convention.

– Creation of the Multinational Force of Central Africa (FOMAC).

About UNSAC

The Secretary General of the United Nations created the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa (UNSAC) on May 28, 1992. This was in application of Resolution 46/37 of the United Nations General Assembly.

UNSAC is aimed at strengthening relations between the peoples and states of Central Africa and preventing the risk of conflicts that could affect peace and security in the Sub-region.

The Committee has 11 member states including: Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, Rwanda, Angola, Burundi and the Republic of Congo.
