Arts and Crafts : Made in Cameroon Forest Products on Showcase in Yaoundé

The fifth furniture and non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) fair has begun in Yaoundé with essentially Made-in-Cameroon products on display.

The fair has been organized by “Artisan au Feminin” led by Hélène Mapoko Engohe in collaboration with the Ministry of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and Handicrafts.

A wide range of items made from non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) are on showcase at the fifth furniture and fair non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP). They include ; furniture of all sorts, wood key holders, decorative items, cutlery, kitchen utensils, cosmetic products, cocoa products and local candies.

Wood Craft Opportunities

Women constitute a good number of exhibitors at the fair. Most of them say they are making earns meet from the business.

Mme Boumsong Marie Angèle has been a Sculptor and Bronze Artist for over 35 years. It’s a job that has permitted her educate her kids, build her house and take care of other needs. She is at the furniture and non-Timber Forest Products ( NTFP) Fair with products which she hopes will bring her more financial returns.

Boghoma Cynthia is another woman excelling in crafts. She got trained only three years ago and runs an enterprise named “Rêve d’or”. She is passionate about the job and loves the feedback from the public. She is particularly driven by her exploits in what she considers “a man’s world”.

These two women are a glaring proof of the countless job opportunities in the transformation of Forest products. The sector offers same opportunities for interested persons regardless of their gender.

Most of the exhibitors at the fair are experts in one or more of the following disciplines; carpentry, Agro-food processing, sculpture, tapestries, marquetry, finishing and varnishing, basketry or crafts.

This is why the President of “Artisan au Feminin”, Hélène Mapoko Engohe says she these numerous opportunities in wood crafts and the transformation of NTFP justifies her desire to “wants to showcase Cameroon’s know-how in wood crafts and Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP)”.

The Fair which began on June 29 will run till Monday July 4, 2022.
