National Security Council: Situation Ahead of School Resumption Assessed

The security situation in Cameroon has come under scrutiny at a meeting at the Ministry of Defence.

The in camera meeting organised a week to the takeoff of the 2022/2023 School Year was organised on the instructions of the Head of State to evaluate the global security situation ahead of the new school year.

The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo who presided over the meeting said security measures have been taken to ensure a successful school year in all ten regions of the country.

He however noted that the security situation in some parts of the country still preoccupies authorities.

The Minister cited hit and run attacks, kidnapping for ransom in the North West and South West Regions as well as sporadic Boko haram attacks in the Far North Region as intended to demobilise, intimidate and water down initiatives taken by Government to ensure a secured learning environment.

He added that the mobilisation of Education stakeholders has been made more evident with the release of the results of the GCE examinations that were written in a safe environment.

In his opening remarks, the Minister said, “Seven days to the start of the 2022/2023 school year, it was appropriate as usual that we brainstorm together on the security of teachers, students and schools, particularly in the Regions where a security crisis is ongoing.”

He added that, “the challenge of securing the start of the school year, is now part of our security management practices throughout the National territory.”

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji who doubles as permanent secretary of the National Security Council, the Delegate General for National Security, Martin Mbarga Nguele, the Director General of External Research, Leopold Maxime Eko Eko, the Secretaries of State at the Ministry of Defence in Charge of the National Gendarmerie, Yves Landry Galax Etoga and that in charge of Veterans and Victims of War, Koumpa Issa, as well as the Private Chief of Defence Staff at the Presidency, Emmanuel Amogou and other stakeholders.
