Poor Oral Hygiene is Main Cause of Halitosis

There are several causes of Halitosis, also known as bad breath . But health experts say the health disorder mostly results from poor oral hygiene.

Halitosis is an oral health condition that causes a an individual to emanate an unpleasant mouth odour. Bad breath is both preventable and treatable.

The main symptom of halitosis is a bad odour from the mouth usually considered to be beyond a socially acceptable health problem.

Dr. Besingi Beatrice is a dentist working at the Mvog Ada Heath district, in Yaounde. She outlines some causes of halitosis to CRTV Web.

“Spicy food, onion, tobacco products , poor mouth hygiene, dry mouth (Xerostomia), mouth infection like dental caries, infected gums , tongue , problems with the nose, throat, gastrointestinal tract or some medications can provoke halitosis. ”

Treatment of the disease depends on the cause of the health problem.

Dr Besingi Beatrice says it’s very important to identify the causes of halitosis to facilitate treatment.

Preventive measures

Experts say the most important way to prevent bad breath is maintaining a good oral hygiene.

Dr Besingi recommends brushing one’s teeth twice daily with a medium sized toothbrush, using a fluoride toothpaste.

“Brush your teeth after every meal, or rinse your mouth with water if you can’t immediately brush will keep the disease at bay,” she told CRTVWeb.

“If you have dry mouth, drink water. Also change your toothbrush after every three months. It’s also important to visit the dentist regularly, or at least after every six months for proper teeth cleaning if there is an accumulation of tartar.”

In addition to the preventive measures is compulsory flossing every evening, after brushing.

The dentist explains that brushing the tongue is very important because it can keep bacterial which can later on lead to halitosis .

Health experts say bad breath can also result from gastric disorder. That is why it is important to identify the health problem and treat it.
