World Heritage for Central Africa: Cameroon To Host Gold Jubilee

Cameroon has been chosen to host The 50th anniversary celebration of The 1972 Convention on World Heritage for the Central African Region.

The modalities for the celebration scheduled for October 10 to 19, 2022 was the focus of a meeting chaired by Prime minister Joseph Dion Ngute in Yaounde.

The different stakeholders assessed the state of ongoing preparations Cameroon has undertaken to ensure the event is successful.

The world heritage convention signed in 1972, merged the concepts of nature conservation and the preservation of culture in one instrument.

Fifty years later, with many natural sites and distinct cultures around the world preserved from destruction, UNESCO wants to mark the 50th anniversary of the convention in pump and colour.

The meeting which Prime Minister Head of Government Joseph Dion Ngute chaired in Yaounde, sought to evaluate the level of preparations in view of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Convention on World heritage for the Central African region and chart the way forward.

Attendees who included the of basic educstion, UNESCO focal point in Cameroon and the Minister of Arts and Culture, Bidoung MKPATT, examined all the different events to mark the anniversary celebration.

The Director of UNESCO for Central Africa, Paul Coustere indicated that 50 years down the line, the number of sites and cultures of the central Africa sub region admitted in the heritage lists is till relatively low. A situation which disfavours the subregion.

At the end of the evaluation meeting, the Prime Minister – Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, instructed stakeholders to ensure Cameroon’s is ready to host the 50th anniversary of the 1972 convention on World heritage in style.
