UHC: Accessible and Affordable Healthcare, Starting Point for Cameroon

Researchers say making healthcare accessible and then affordable are important steps Cameroon must take in order to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

These remarks were made during a conference organised by an NGO, Affirmative Action this December 19, as part of activities to mark the International Universal Health Coverage Day, observed on December 12.

In a roundtable with three panelists and an audience of public health stakeholders and journalists, the issue of Cameroon’s access to Universal Health Coverage was dissected.

The panelists discussed hindrances to UHC and proposed strategies which could accelerate Cameroon’s move.

One of the Panelists, a Researcher, Dr Albert Ze argued that for Cameroon to access Universal Health Coverage there are some stages which must not be jumped.

There must be physical accessibility to the health centres first. He explained this further by saying that some localities have just one health centre which is very far off.

Dr Albert Ze added that there must also be well trained personnel who are motivated to work.

The Researcher also called for a reorientation of finances in the health sector. To him, finances should be allocated to more pertinent issues. He also insisted on preventing diseases. “For instance, malaria is more costly to the Government than it is to the individual so let malaria be prevented at all costs,” he expatiated.

Another Panelist and a Key Population Expert for UHC, Joseph Messinga on his part, called for an ammelioration of the living standards of Cameroonians. To him, this is the only way through which people will be able to contribute financially to ensure UHC.

The Executive Director of Affirmative Action, Kevin Ambah Evina in his own presentation called on those in charge of Cameroon’s move towards UHC to be responsible and accountable.

This discussion is one amongst many going on to ensure that Cameroonians get to enjoy Universal Health Coverage as prescribed by SDG 3.8.
