AFCON 2023: Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire humbled by 4-0

Negative reactions filled the air Monday night after the host country, Côte d’Ivoire suffered a 4-0 defeat from Equatorial Guinea.

Ivorian fans vented their anger on the social media. Many blamed the national team for playing the last group game with lack of determination.

While some put the blame on the coach for being unrealistic with his line up, others traded the blame on players who failed the trample on their opponents as elephants.

Graphics designers have produced images of elephants being dragged to the emergency ward that are making rounds on Facebook and Instagram.

On Facebook and YouTube, images of fans teasing Ivorian former football star Didier Drogba also featured with huge reactions.

The slogan “discouragement is not Ivorians” as they look as to the results of other group games to hope to qualify for the next round.

Some Ivorians say, if Cameroon’s match against the Gambia ends in a draw then Côte d’Ivoire stance a chance of moving to the next round.

A short video of the anxiety that marked the high moments of Cameroon’s match against Senegal has surface showing FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o Fils in moments anxiously expecting an second goal but felt even more disappointed when the lions missed and a counter attack resulted in Cameroon conceding a third goal.

Most fans are now in to calculations on which teams could qualify for the round of 16 as best third following the results of other games.
