AFCON 2023: 143 Goals Scored in 48 Matches

Some members of the CAF technical group have met with the press in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire with update on some statistical data on the ongoing AFCON tournament.

It’s been told the competition has so far seen more goals scored in 48 matches than in any other edition and the Caf technicians are certain African football is on a steady progress.

They have assured the press that referees officiating the matches are of high professional standings, so there is no room for irregularities.

According to the panelists, AFCON 2023 is having more twists than usual.

Statistically the members say 143 goals have been scored in 48 encounters indicating 43 more than last edition with most scored from crosses and only five from counter attacks.

They also observed that the 4:3:3 formation was prominent among most participating nations.

Averagely they say Cape Verde has more players above the age 27 than any other country while Gambia and Cote d’Ivoire had relatively younger players.

The technicians praised south Africa for team consistency and for betting more on home based talents which they say is fundamental in developing football on the continent.

The discourse on the need to continue encouraging goalkeepers is championed by Cameroon’s legendary goal stopper, Joseph Antoine Bell who says African goal keeping talents are already taking global top spots, thus the necessity to continue encouraging more to take interest in this position.

The question of refereeing within the competition came up with some alleged unsatisfactory match outcomes blamed on supposed rough work by match officials.

The CAF technicians assured the press there is no quack within the sector and are comfortable with the output of the referees which they say is as a result of the optimal training and follow up they receive more than a year before the competition.

Meantime, the idea of the cooling break is justified in high humidity in the host cities and they say CAF is keeping a close watch on weather changes.

Another presser has been announced with the CAF President before the end of the competition.
